About Solarbarn Domestic Systems

Based in Saffron Walden, Essex, and supplying the Saffron Walden, Great Dunmow, Royston and Bishops Stortford areas, Solarbarn Ltd are your local experts for domestic solar systems.

Thank-you for coming to our website. We hope it tells you all you need to know about what’s involved in getting solar power for your home. (And if it doesn’t, please ring us at our Saffron Walden HQ on 01799 501451 and we will be happy to talk to you.)

Your free Solarbarn survey

The first thing we do is survey your property to find out whether your roof is suitable for a solar power (Solar PV) system. We take into account the direction it points, how much shade affects it (if any), what your roof is made of and whether it can support the weight of the solar panels, whether your home is listed or in a conservation area and so on.

If your roof seems suitable for Solar PV, we’ll conduct a full computer-assisted survey that will show you how much power a Solar PV system will produce on your roof—based on the type of solar panels you buy (some solar panels are more efficient than others), the number of panels you install, the orientation of your roof and the sunshine records for your area.

This forecast shows you how much solar power you can expect to produce and therefore how much you can save on your fuel bills and how much income you’ll get from the feed-in tariff.

Rest assured we will not recommend a Solar PV system if your home is not suitable.

Choosing your solar panels and mounting system

Not all Solar PV panels are the same—with substantially varying levels of quality, efficiency and price. We offer a range of solar panels, all from reputable manufacturers like Panasonic, Conergy and ET Solar, in a range of attractive finishes. We also provide different options for mounting to ensure we get the best appearance for your solar power array.

Our Price Promise

Whichever solar panels you choose we believe we offer the best balance of prices and service for high quality Solar PV installation in the Saffron Walden, Great Dunmow, Royston and Bishops Stortford area. If another local supplier has given you a price for a similar solar system that we can supply, we’ll usually beat it.

Installing your solar energy system

Installation of a home solar power system normally takes two to three days. We erect scaffolding then fit the panels using special brackets which slip between and under the roof tiles to avoid damaging them, and to ensure your roof remains watertight.

If your roof has slate tiles, we use a slightly more expensive fitting.

At the same time as fitting the solar panels on your roof, we install an inverter box. This is a unit around the size of a small boiler that converts the power from the solar panels into AC electricity that you can use in your home and export to the national grid. Typically, we’ll fit this in your garage or in a convenient understairs cupboard or similar location.

Monitor your solar power system’s output

With all Solarbarn Solar PV systems you can see exactly how much power you’re producing at any time simply by looking at the readout on your inverter.

You can also choose add-on remote monitoring units like the Wattson shown here which transmits wireless data from your solar power system to a display which you can position anywhere in your house within range.

The Wattson’s numerical display constantly monitors your usage to the nearest watt, whilst its backlight shows you at-a-glance whether you’re using below your average (blue), your average (mauve), above your average (red) or generating more electricity than you’re using (green). Simple and great fun too!

Online monitoring for large Solar PV systems

With Solar PV systems of more than 10kW, we provide free online monitoring. Simply log in to your online dashboard and see how much power you’re making!

Your free Energy Performance Certificate

Since April 1st, 2012 legislation requires  that your home has an energy performance rating of level D or better in order to qualify for the higher feed-in tariff. Generally, any home with double glazing, good loft insulation and some additional efficiency measures should reach this standard. (And installation of Solarbarn Solar PV systems can often move a home into the D bracket if it wasn’t before.)

Getting your home surveyed for your Energy Performance Certificate would normally cost you around £100 but Solarbarn will undertake your ‘EPC’ survey completely free as part of the solar panel installation.
